PJ Harvey: Winner of the Mercury Prize 2011

6 Sep

After an eight week wait the shortlist came down to one winner and that was PJ Harvey. Her new album ‘Let England Shake’ features what are arguably a number of melodic protest songs. To ensure she did this right, a lot of research was undertaken on the subject of war and the state of the country, before finishing the album and it has thoroughly paid off. Her lyrics, tone and instrumentals have struck a chord with many in the music community and landed her this prestigious prize for a second time.

There wasn’t any drama in her speech; she wasn’t drunk, she wasn’t gushing, she wasn’t rock and roll, she was simply composed and humble. A refreshing attitude after making such a personal album.

I’ll leave you with the video to the song she performed at the awards: ‘The Words That Maketh Murder’, congratulations to you Polly!
